銀杏版画
GINKO HANGA
Ginko Hanga logo design inspired by traditional Kamon. The ginko is the symbol of Tokyo where my woodblock printing tradition is from (Kyoto having a slightly different ethic and practices). The three ginkgo leafs represent the craftspeople involved in the production process. The carver, designer and printer. The fourth member of the quartet is the publisher and is represented as the circle bringing all three together to produce prints of the highest quality.

相合
Soai
The symbol is a critical concept in how to clear a block. The idea is to orientate this symbol horizontally along the grain of the wood (as you see in the top banner) and clear with your chisels according to the arrow directions. If you carve agains the directions given in this symbol its likely that the wood will splinter and run, chipping the lines your carefully carved.

小刀 - こがたな
Kogatana
One of the names for the main carving knife of a carver. The other being Hangi Tō
It Translates literally to ‘little sword’ and is the most important tool in any carvers kit. The image is of ‘Osen Kasa’ a work by Komura Settai I produced a number of years ago.
