The History of Hizib Nahdlatul Wathan




TGKH. M. Zainudin Abdul Majid was born in Pancor, Lombok Timur, on November 16, 1908. He was a descendant of Sayyid Ahmad al-Muhajir, a Yemeni scholar who migrated to Indonesia in the 17th century. He studied Islam under various teachers, such as his father TGKH. Abdul Majid bin Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Muhajir, his uncle TGKH. Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Muhajir, and his brother-in-law TGKH. Muhammad Natsir bin Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Muhajir. He also traveled to Mecca and Medina to deepen his knowledge and perform pilgrimage.


He was active in social and religious activities since his youth. He established several Islamic schools (pesantren) in Lombok, such as Pesantren Pancor (1929), Pesantren Masbagik (1930), Pesantren Pringgabaya (1932), Pesantren Selong (1933), and Pesantren Mataram (1934). He also founded Nahdlatul Wathan (NW) in 1934 as a movement to spread Islam and education among the people of Lombok and beyond. He was involved in the struggle for Indonesian independence from the Dutch colonialism and Japanese occupation. He was arrested several times by the Dutch authorities for his resistance activities. He was also one of the founders of Masyumi, a political party that represented the Islamic interests in Indonesia. He died on March 23, 1981, at the age of 72.


Hizib Nahdlatul Wathan is one of his literary works that reflects his devotion to Islam and his love for his people. He wrote the book in Arabic and Indonesian languages, using his own handwriting.   • Shalat al-Awliya: Prayers that commemorate and seek intercession from the saints and the righteous.



  • Shalat al-Ulama: Prayers that acknowledge and appreciate the scholars and the learned.



  • Shalat al-Shuhada: Prayers that remember and honor the martyrs and the heroes.



  • Shalat al-Ahbab: Prayers that express love and gratitude to the friends and the beloved.
