This design was created as the New Year print for Dave Bull's Patreon campaign rewards. The original image comes from an unknown artist, who designed it for a pochibukuro—small paper envelopes traditionally used for gifting money or tipping on special occasions. The original artwork was narrow and slightly diagonal. I drew in the what I imagined missing sections would look like to adapt the image for the larger hagaki size print you see above. To soften up the cloud pattern I also added Itabokashi (block gradation) to create a fuzzy edges around the clouds.
The image depicts Raijin, the Shinto god of thunder, known for using his drums to create thunder and lighting. In this playful reinterpretation, we see Raijin using a hook at the end of a lightning bolt to fish his fallen drum out of the sea.
