Winter Village

This is the first commissioned print I made for Mokuhankan.

The design is taken from the book Hokusai Gafu, a collection of his images first published in 1830. The locations in Hokusai’s volume are completely imaginary; the book was not a travel guide. The pages in the book feature full-color images using a limited palette, typically consisting of a couple of gray blocks, light blue, and rusty orange. This image depicts a portion of one page—a sort of crop , with minor adjustments made to help the new image flow better in its new format.
